Frequently Asked Questions
What is valgus extension overload?
Valgus extension overload is an elbow condition seen in throwing athletes. It occurs when repeated throwing stress causes pinching or irritation in the back and inside of the elbow. It can lead to pain, bone spurs, and reduced throwing performance.
What causes valgus extension overload?
It is caused by repetitive throwing forces, especially during the late cocking and acceleration phases. Baseball pitchers and other overhead athletes are at higher risk. It can occur along with UCL stress or elbow mechanics problems.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms include pain in the back or inside of the elbow during throwing. Athletes may notice decreased velocity, stiffness, or pain when straightening the elbow. Swelling or catching can occur in more advanced cases.
How is valgus extension overload treated?
Treatment includes rest from throwing, physical therapy, mechanics evaluation, and gradual return to throwing. Rehab focuses on shoulder, core, and elbow strength. Surgery may be considered if bone spurs or mechanical symptoms persist.
When can I return to throwing?
Return depends on pain-free motion, strength, and throwing mechanics. Many athletes need several weeks to months of rehab before full throwing. A structured throwing program helps reduce recurrence.
