Total knee arthroplasty replaces the damaged surfaces of the knee joint with metal and plastic implants to relieve pain and restore function in patients with advanced knee arthritis.
Recommended for patients with severe knee osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis causing significant pain and functional limitation that has not responded to conservative treatment.
Performed under spinal or general anesthesia, typically taking 1.5 to 2 hours. The damaged cartilage and bone are removed and replaced with prosthetic components. Walking begins the day of or day after surgery.
Risks include infection, blood clots, stiffness, implant loosening, nerve injury, and the need for revision surgery over time.
