Superior capsular reconstruction uses a graft to reconstruct the superior joint capsule of the shoulder, restoring stability and function in patients with massive irreparable rotator cuff tears who are not candidates for reverse shoulder replacement.
Indicated for younger active patients with massive irreparable rotator cuff tears causing significant pain and pseudoparalysis who wish to preserve the native joint.
Performed arthroscopically under anesthesia, typically taking 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A dermal allograft or other graft material is secured to the superior glenoid and greater tuberosity. A sling is worn for 6 weeks postoperatively.
Risks include graft failure, stiffness, infection, nerve injury, and the need for revision surgery. Outcomes vary and your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations.
