Subtalar or ankle fusion eliminates painful motion in a severely arthritic joint by fusing the bones together, providing durable pain relief at the cost of joint motion.
Indicated for patients with end-stage subtalar or ankle arthritis causing severe pain and functional limitation where joint replacement is not appropriate.
Performed under regional or general anesthesia, typically taking 1 to 2 hours. Screws or plates are used to compress and hold the joint in a fused position. Non-weight bearing is required during bone healing.
Risks include non-union, hardware complications, infection, adjacent joint arthritis, wound healing issues, and nerve injury.
