Subacromial decompression is an arthroscopic procedure that creates more space for the rotator cuff tendons by removing bone spurs and inflamed tissue beneath the acromion.
Recommended for patients with persistent shoulder impingement syndrome or rotator cuff tendinitis that has not improved with physical therapy, activity modification, or injections.
Performed arthroscopically under anesthesia, typically taking 30 to 60 minutes. A shaver and burr are used to remove inflamed bursa and bone spurs. Most patients go home the same day.
Risks include incomplete relief, infection, stiffness, and damage to surrounding structures. Results are best when combined with a structured rehabilitation program.
