Shoulder stabilization surgery restores stability to a chronically unstable shoulder. It addresses torn or stretched ligaments and labral tissue that cause repeated dislocations or subluxations.
Indicated for patients with recurrent shoulder dislocations or instability that has failed conservative management including physical therapy and bracing.
Performed arthroscopically or open depending on the degree of bone loss. The labrum and capsule are tightened and reattached. A sling is worn postoperatively and rehabilitation begins within days of surgery.
Risks include recurrence of instability, stiffness, nerve injury, and infection. Bone loss may require additional procedures such as a Latarjet.
