Plantar fascia release is a surgical procedure that partially cuts the plantar fascia to relieve tension and resolve chronic heel pain that has not responded to conservative treatment.
Recommended for patients with chronic plantar fasciitis causing persistent heel pain for more than 6 to 12 months despite physical therapy, orthotics, injections, and activity modification.
Performed under local or regional anesthesia, typically taking 20 to 30 minutes. An endoscopic or open technique is used to release a portion of the fascia. Most patients go home the same day.
Risks include incomplete relief, arch flattening, nerve injury, infection, and plantar fascia rupture.
