Patellar tendon repair reattaches the torn patellar tendon to restore knee extension and allow return to activity after complete tendon rupture.
Indicated for complete patellar tendon ruptures causing inability to extend the knee or straight-leg raise. Early surgical repair provides the best outcomes.
Performed under regional or general anesthesia, typically taking 1 to 1.5 hours. The tendon is reattached to the patella or tibial tubercle using sutures or anchors. A brace is worn postoperatively.
Risks include re-rupture, stiffness, patellar height abnormality, quadriceps weakness, and infection.
