Partial knee replacement resurfaces only the damaged compartment of the knee while preserving healthy bone, cartilage, and ligaments in the remaining compartments.
Indicated for patients with isolated single-compartment knee arthritis, intact ligaments, and a correctable deformity who are appropriate candidates based on age, weight, and activity level.
Performed under spinal or general anesthesia, typically taking 1 to 1.5 hours. Only the affected compartment is replaced. Recovery is generally faster than total knee replacement.
Risks include progression of arthritis in other compartments, implant loosening, infection, blood clots, and the need for conversion to total knee replacement.
