Osteochondral grafting transplants plugs of healthy bone and cartilage to repair focal cartilage defects in the knee or other joints, restoring a smooth joint surface.
Indicated for younger active patients with focal full-thickness cartilage defects who are not candidates for joint replacement. Defect size and location guide the choice between OATS and other cartilage techniques.
Performed arthroscopically or through a small open incision under anesthesia. Cylindrical plugs of healthy cartilage and bone are harvested and press-fit into the defect. Protected weight bearing is required during early healing.
Risks include graft failure, donor site morbidity, incomplete healing, infection, and the need for additional procedures.
