Iliotibial band syndrome is one of the most common overuse injuries in runners. The iliotibial band is a thick band of tissue that runs from the hip to the knee, and when it becomes tight or inflamed it causes pain on the outside of the knee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IT band syndrome?
IT band syndrome is irritation of the band of tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh and knee. It commonly causes pain on the outer side of the knee. It is especially common in runners and cyclists.
What causes IT band syndrome?
It is caused by repetitive bending and straightening of the knee. Overuse, poor biomechanics, and weak hip muscles can contribute. Sudden increases in training can increase risk.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms include pain on the outside of the knee, especially during running or downhill activity. Pain may worsen with continued activity. Some people feel tightness along the outer thigh.
How is it treated?
Treatment includes rest, stretching, strengthening, and correcting movement patterns. Physical therapy is very effective. Foam rolling and hip strengthening are commonly used.
When can I return to running?
Return depends on pain-free movement and improved mechanics. Many runners return over several weeks with proper rehab. Gradual mileage increase is important.
