FAI correction is a surgical procedure that reshapes abnormal bone around the hip joint to eliminate painful impingement between the femoral head and acetabulum during movement.
Indicated for patients with cam or pincer impingement causing hip pain, labral tears, or cartilage damage confirmed on imaging that has not responded to physical therapy and activity modification.
Performed arthroscopically under anesthesia, typically taking 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Excess bone is shaved down and any labral tears are repaired simultaneously. Crutches are used for 2 to 4 weeks after surgery.
Risks include incomplete impingement correction, labral re-tear, nerve injury, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and the need for revision surgery.
