Facet joint injections deliver corticosteroid and local anesthetic directly into the facet joints of the spine to reduce inflammation and relieve back or neck pain.
Used for patients with facet joint arthritis or synovitis causing axial back or neck pain that has not responded to physical therapy and oral medications.
Performed under fluoroscopic guidance in an outpatient setting. A needle is placed into the facet joint and medication is injected. The procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes. Most patients go home the same day.
Risks include temporary soreness, skin discoloration, infection, and rare nerve injury. Your physician will review all risks before the procedure.
