Distal clavicle excision, known as the Mumford procedure, removes a small portion of the end of the collarbone to eliminate painful bone-on-bone contact at the AC joint.
Indicated for patients with AC joint arthritis or osteolysis causing persistent shoulder pain, particularly with overhead activity or weightlifting, that has not responded to conservative treatment.
Performed arthroscopically under anesthesia, typically taking 30 to 45 minutes. A small amount of bone is removed from the end of the clavicle to create a pain-free gap. Most patients go home the same day.
Risks include incomplete pain relief, instability of the AC joint, infection, and stiffness. Your surgeon will discuss whether this is appropriate based on your specific anatomy.
