De Quervain release is a surgical procedure that opens the first dorsal compartment of the wrist to relieve compression on the tendons causing pain on the thumb side of the wrist.
Recommended for patients with De Quervain tenosynovitis causing persistent radial-sided wrist pain and thumb discomfort that has not resolved with splinting, activity modification, or corticosteroid injections.
Performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, typically taking 20 to 30 minutes. A small incision is made over the first dorsal compartment and the sheath is released. Most patients go home the same day.
Risks include injury to the superficial radial nerve, incomplete release, scar sensitivity, and infection.
