Broström Procedure (Lateral Ankle Stabilization)

The Broström procedure repairs and tightens the stretched or torn lateral ankle ligaments to restore stability and prevent recurrent ankle sprains.

Return to sport typically takes 4 to 6 months with a structured rehabilitation program.

Who Is This For?

Indicated for patients with chronic lateral ankle instability causing recurrent sprains and giving way that has not responded to physical therapy and bracing.

What to Expect

Performed under regional or general anesthesia, typically taking 45 to 60 minutes. The ATFL and CFL are shortened and reattached to restore tension. A boot is worn postoperatively for 4 to 6 weeks.

Risks to Know

Risks include stiffness, nerve injury to the superficial peroneal nerve, infection, re-injury, and incomplete stability restoration.
