ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure to replace a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. A graft taken from your own tissue or a donor is used to rebuild the ligament and restore knee stability.
ACL reconstruction is typically recommended for active patients with a complete ACL tear who wish to return to sports or have persistent knee instability affecting daily activities.
The surgery is performed arthroscopically under anesthesia and usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The torn ligament is replaced with a graft that is secured to the bone. Most patients go home the same day. A rehabilitation program begins shortly after surgery.
Risks include graft failure, infection, stiffness, and re-injury. Your surgeon will discuss your specific risk profile before the procedure.
